10. Concept Map- The Little Mermaid
Students will
listen to me read the book in class
I. Read
the book
Students will listen to me read the book aloud in
class. After hearing the book they will have a few minutes to brainstorm. After
that we will talk about what they think the setting and characters look like.
This will give them a chance to be creative before seeing the movie and what
the characters actually look like.
A. The
Little Mermaid
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.7 With prompting and support,
describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they
appear.
1. By reading the book
students will be able to use their imagination to visualize the characters
Then they will
color their drawing
I. Coloring/Drawing
Activity
By this point the students have created, in their
imagination, what they think the characters look like. The drawing activity
lets them use their artistic ability to create the characters in their heads.
Then they will put the characters in an ocean setting. Then lastly they will
color or paint their drawing.
Students will watch
the movie and get to watch the book play
out on screen
I. Watch
the movie
Watching the movie after reading the book will give
student a better visual of what they just heard. Also it will give students a
better understanding of the story and what the characters look like. Children
love watching movies so this should be very entertaining for them also.
Students will get
to see what the characters actually look like
Students will get
in groups and pick their favorite scene in the movie
I. Reenact a scene in the movie
The students will be separated into groups and each
group will decide on a favorite scene in the movie. The students will get
plenty of time to feel comfortable in their parts. After practicing, the
students will get in front of the class and reenact that scene. This should be
fun for the students and hopefully make them more comfortable in front of other
students.
Then they will get
in front of the class and reenact that scene
Students will pick
their favorite character in the book/movie
I. Dress up as their favorite character
As a fun activity, at the end of the week the
children will get to come to class dressed up as their favorite character. And
this should make it more fun when they get to reenact their scene from the
movie/book.
On the last day of
the project students will get to dress up like their favorite character
Students will draw
in pencil a scene from the book, complete with characters and a setting. The
drawing will eventually get color when the drawing is complete.
I. Students
will draw what they think each character looks like after reading the book

I really like your use of pictures as your topic headings that go with your lesson and activities and I LOVE The Little Mermaid!
ReplyDeleteLOVED your theme! I love how you incorporated coloring and artistic activities because Kindergarteners love that kind of stuff. Also the dress up day idea is really fun for them. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI like your concept map and the pictures that you used, though it did have a lot of words on it. I like that you are having them dress up as their favorite characters and reenact a scene.
ReplyDeleteYour concept map fits the topic very well! I like how you would let your students guess what the characters look like after they read the book and before watching the movie!
ReplyDeleteI like the dressing up and acting out the scene. Those should be done both on the same day I feel like! Very good lesson plan though!
ReplyDeleteI love your "Little Mermaid Theme" and the activities you used to incorporate your standard. Very well organized and thought out.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the idea of dressing up as their favorite character! Can I be in your class?!
ReplyDeleteThis lesson would be very interesting for students of this age. I would like to see how the students would reenact these scenes.
ReplyDeleteI like how you involve illustration within your lesson.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the Little Mermaid. Make sure you really talk up the man roles in the story though, so that you can get the boys' interest too.
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you would have the students use their creativity by drawing how they thought the characters look. I think it is a very cute idea to let the students watch the movie and compare their drawings to the actual characters. Just be careful when having them google costume ideas for the little mermaid! This lesson seems very interactive!
ReplyDeleteI like the beach and ocean theme of your concept map! I like that you're allowing the students to picture the characters on their own and come up with their own ideas for the story. All of your ideas are really great for students to be interactive. My only critique is that you should try to incorporate more "educational" activities such as worksheets.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very fun lesson! Kindergarteners will love this. Awesome job picking out a fun story. They will love the dress up day and getting to play their favorite part. Great way to integrate the arts with literature! Nice job.
ReplyDeleteThe Little Mermaid is a good idea for a lesson. Will they draw on paper or on paint? There are many versions of the Little Mermaid make sure it is all Disney. Also with dressing, up some schools do not allow this, always have a back up plan.
ReplyDeleteI like how you let the students use their imagination and encourage them to be creative.
ReplyDeleteI love your concept map. It is very appealing. Your dressing up activity is creative and will engage the students through role play. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI really liked the creativity you used in your concept map. I think you could use more activities to interest the boys.
ReplyDeleteI really like that you let the kids use their imagination to think about what the characters look like before watching the movie.
